The staff of the Cleveland Gay Peoples Chronicle announced resumption of publication after a 10 month sabbatical. The Chronical, Cleveland only Gay newspaper stopped publication after the death of its founder, Charles Callender. Callender suffered a major heart attack and died on October 28, 1986 at St. Lukes Hospital were he had been admitted for chest pains.

When asked about the long time between publications the new editor, Martha Pontoni explained," We were very shocked at Charlie's death and at first we didn't quite believe we could publish in the same style that Charlie had."

The remaining staff them banded together and attempted to sift through some of the legal mess that was left from Callender's estate. "We had most of our equipment taken from us from Chalie's heir" recalls Pontoni, "We were't left with much to work with".

The decision to start publication was made late last month by Pontoni and Robert Downing because of the continued need and request by the community for a paper. "After all this

we still received requests for subscriptions. It made see that a huge need still exsisted for the service the Chonicle provided", commented Downing." I hope that people will be aware that we aren't going to be publishing the Chronicle of old."

According to Pontoni and Downing the paper will be smaller at first, and then expand in time. The Chronicle is still planning to be active in Cleveland Gay Politics but without the old controversy. We will be starting all in the Community with a whole new editorial policy. I hope people will read us and see" offers Pontoni about the new editorial policy.

Also new is the subscription policy. Now there will be three levels of subscribers with a different sliding scale for each. Both Pontoni and Downing stressed the need for Community support for the paper to survive but they reconize that not everyone 16 well off thus the sliding scale for Subscription rates. A regular subscribtion will be from $10 -$20, a Friend of the Chronicle will be $21-$50, Supporter, $51-$100 and finally a Patron at $101-$250. "I hope this system encourges the people who can donate and help to do so. We just aren't in the position we used to be finacially and we want to make this paper succeed", said Pontoni. She also commented that the saddest part of the old Chronicle were the advertisers that refused to pay up on their accounts. "If we aren't going to support ourselves no one wil1" Pontoni was quick to comment that most of the old Chronicle advertisers settled right away, but a few still haven't paid. She did say that no one will an outstanding bill will be allowed to advertise. "We need to very business like if we are going to survive.

Both Pontoni and Downing are very optimistic about the paper's future here in the City of Cleveland. Plans are to include ads for Gay services from all over the country and well as news from all over. Volunteers are very much needed and welcome, as well as news of group and community functions. The Chronicle's new phone number 18 (216) 8813848 but the address is still the same at P. O. Box 5426 Cleveland, Ohio 44101.
